Be a part of the spectrum: Auroris auditions

With the school year in full swing and the Auroris Dance Company gearing up for another year of fantastic performances, it’s time to get ready for your big audition.

Auroris will be holding an informational meeting and informal dance class before their fall round of auditions on Friday, August 15 from 3:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the dance studio. At this clinic, prospective members will not only be given their audition forms, but they will also be shown audition skills at the free hip-hop and jazz classes taught by Auroris alumni being offered. Lauryn Schmelzer will be teaching the jazz class and the hip-hop class will be taught by Johnny Woo.

Also at the clinic, you have the opportunity to see the newest Step Up movie with the current members of the Auroris Dance Company.

Both boys and girls are encouraged to try out and auditions are open to all grade levels. How you perform at the clinic will not affect your audition results. It’s advised that you wear clothes you can move in and that you bring proper shoes.

The official auditions for Auroris will be held on Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19, both from 3:45 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the dance studio. If you’re interested in being in the hip-hop section of the dance company, your audition is on Monday. Dancers who want to be part of the jazz/ballet/modern section should come on Tuesday.

At the audition, dancers will be taught a routine, also by an Auroris alumnus. The hip-hop audition routine will be taught by Adrian Rosete and the jazz audition routine will be taught by Ellie Govis.

Additionally, if you are a specialist in pointe or tap, it’s asked that you bring a one minute routine with you to perform.

Reasons for trying out for the Auroris Dance Company are endless. “The reason why I love Auroris is that we are one big happy dance family,” co-captain senior Keenna Shah said. “We get to work with so many different choreographers and even execute our own choreography.”

“I love coaching Auroris because every day, I get to hang out with the funniest, most creative and talented dancers in the world,” head coach Deanna Sortino said. “The Auroris kids are one big family and I am so lucky to have become their ‘adopted mom'”.

Auroris’ first dance show of the school year will be held in January. Whether you’re sitting in the audience watching it or up on stage dancing in it as part of the company, “you won’t regret it,” Shah said. If you have any questions about Auroris or the audition process, contact Ms. Sortino at [email protected].
