How to beat those winter blues

How+to+beat+those+winter+blues

The “holiday season” has ended and yet winter just keeps going with no end in sight.  In Chicago there is no need for a groundhog to confirm that there will be at least six more weeks of winter.  At first the cold weather and snow were amusing and exciting, but now it just seems repetitive.  There have been numerous record breaking cold days and snowfalls so far this winter, and there are probably still more to come.   Even though spring break is less than a month away, true Chicagoans know it won’t be spring but rather winter break number two.

However, just because it’s cold out, doesn’t mean you should be a “Scrooge” or have the winter blues. Here are a few suggestions on how to beat those winter blues and end winter on a happier note:

  1. Embrace the weather

You know what they say: “If ya can’t beat em, join em”.  Sometimes the easiest way to cheer up in the winter is to just embrace the cold.  You can go outside and take a walk, breathe in the fresh air, and soak up the winter sun.  If it snows, go sledding or build a snowman – we are all still children at heart.  Just be sure to bundle up and keep your toes warm.

  1. Eat summer foods

Making a fruit smoothie or a milkshake might cheer you up and remind you that this cold winter will come to an end.  Sometimes all it takes is a ripe strawberry to bring back those great summer memories and bring a smile to your face.  The most important thing to remember is that regardless of the temperature, it is never too cold for ice cream.

  1.  Have a movie night

Invite some friends over and have a Disney movie marathon, or watch an entire season of New Girl on Netflix.  Grab some blankets, sit in front of the fireplace, have some hot chocolate and popcorn, and just relax.  It is good to forget about the cold for a little while and just enjoy a good movie with friends.

  1. Do a good deed

Helping other people will always brighten your mood.  Whether it be volunteering at a local food shelter or just watching your neighbor’s children for a while, doing something nice will leave you with a smile on your face.  If you are not sure where to donate your time, the emails from WHO club can provide numerous volunteer opportunities.

  1.   Dress up

While walking around in baggy sweatpants and a sweatshirt is comfortable, it only reminds you that it is freezing outside.  Instead, lose the sweats and trying looking nice.  If you take the time to pick out a nice outfit and pay attention to what your hair looks like, you’ll feel confident in yourself and your ability to conquer the cold.  The worst case scenario is that you look stylish one day in the winter.

Even though its still below freezing, you can get through it. Hang in there and remember summer vacation is less than three months away!
