Interstellar: Troy’s thoughts

Interstellar%3A+Troys+thoughts

After finally finding some free time, I decided to go watch Interstellar with a few of my friends. I tried a different approach to this movie: I didn’t watch the trailer, nor did I read much about it. There was a lot of hype surrounding it, but the key point in seeing it was the director/writer, Christopher Nolan. Many of you are probably familiar with his popular works: The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Man of Steel and more. Similarly, with Interstellar, Nolan did not disappoint. Before the minor spoilers begin, I want to sum it up by saying this movie is a MUST SEE.

Warning: Minor spoilers below.

In the beginning, we are introduced to a former NASA pilot, Cooper, along with his son, daughter and father-in-law. The scene is set in the future and this family runs a farm in a famine-struck Earth. After stumbling on binary coordinates, Cooper and his daughter Murphy go to the location to find a secret NASA base.

There, they meet Professor Brand, who is trying to find a planet that can sustain human life. He explains of a wormhole that, through “Lazarus” missions, leads to three possible planets capable of doing so. Cooper agrees to embark on a new mission to recover the data of the astronauts who explored the three planets – Miller, Edmunds, and Mann. Murphy is devastated when she finds out her dad is leaving. Cooper teams up with biologist Amelia, physicist Romilly, geographer Doyle and two robots TARS and CASE in attempt to help save humanity.

Overall, this movie is definitely in contention for movie of the year. Matthew McCanaughey nailed the role of Cooper and the acting was very spot on. Michael Caine, after his past amazing performances in the Dark Knight Trilogy, is a very fitting actor for the wise Professor Brand.

I was blown away by the visuals and special effects, especially when the group enters the wormhole. Hans Zimmer’s music was astounding and fitting as always, and Christopher Nolan made “another space movie” turn out incredible, thought provoking and mind blowing. You will walk out of the theater wondering what year it is and how much time has passed. The movie approaches three hours. however, it is paced so perfectly that you’re immersed in it right from the start.

I give Interstellar 5 out of 5 North Stars and deem it a must watch film.
