Tile palette for ingenuity: DIY photo coasters

Tile+palette+for+ingenuity%3A+DIY+photo+coasters+

I absolutely adore this do it yourself project. Not only can coasters be used as a tray for a cold drink, but they can also be used for a sentimental room decoration. I originally made coasters as part of a Father’s Day present, and I liked them so much that I decided to make some for myself. This project is both inexpensive and simple, perfect for a birthday present for relatives or friends. Let’s get started!

Supply list:

1. 4×4 ceramic tiles (I got mine from Home Depot for a killer deal!)

2. Printed photographs (I suggest you used glossy finished photograph paper. Normal printer paper will most likely rip from the glossy top coat finish. I went to Walgreens and printed 4×4 photographs straight from my phone.)

3. Mod Podge glossy finish

4. Foam brush(es)

5. Felt pads (also from Home Depot)

Take it step-by-step:

Before starting, I like to add the tiny felt pads on the rough side of the tile. Put one on each of the four corners.

1. Apply one thin coat of Mod Podge to the ceramic tile. Be sure to spread the lacquer evenly and make sure that it reaches the edges.

2. Place the desired photo directly upon the wet mod podge. Let it sit for about five minutes.

3. After the photograph seems firmly set, apply one to three more thin layers of Mod Podge. I only applied one top layer on these coasters and it worked perfectly, but don’t be afraid to experiment. If tiny bubbles appear, make sure to spread them out immediately, or the finish will dry that way.

4. Let the coasters sit for about a day before you use them.

Although I used personal photographs for this step-by-step tutorial, don’t limit yourself. You can use other fun materials to make these coasters, such as cork, buttons, scrabble pieces, dried flowers and mosaic pieces.

Happy crafting!
