More than 120 poetry lovers eager for exciting verse  and 18 energetic poets helped make the first ever Niles North Poetry Slam a great success. The event was hosted by Scott Bramley, coordinator of the Point, and English teacher William Sullivan, sponsor of Outspoken Poetry Club, on Tuesday, May 22, in the Codell Commons.

Participating poets strutted their stuff in three rounds of voting by the audience. At the end, five poets were left standing and slamming. Senior Kyle Rosenberg, known as Kai-Shawn Speaks, won first place with a score of 28.5. Junior Alexia Kemp followed as second with a score of 28.4, senior Annie Kim placed third with a score of 28.3, and junior Raquael Logan placed fourth with a score of 27.5. Senior Briana Rodriguez placed fifth with a score of 26.3.

The prize-winning poets received a bag full of goodies as their reward for dazzling the crowd with their spoken-word dexterity. Top favorite Rosenberg also received a $10 gift card.
