Calling all freshman: Advice from upperclassmen

Niles North is surrounded by helping hands, whether it be a teacher or a peer. Incoming freshman often come into high school not knowing what to expect, but with good time management and advice from some upperclassmen, freshman have many opportunities to explore what the school community has to offer.

Ever lost your phone?  Computer?  Every year people lose valuables at school due to the lack of awareness of the school’s security facilities.  Niles North provides netbook lockers so you don’t have to worry if your laptop got lost. It located near the athletic entrance security desk that students can use during gym periods.

“Be responsible, and don’t bring unnecessary things to school!  If you won’t need it during the day, leave it at home to be safe,” said senior Jonah Toch, “The school is a big place and there are over 2,000 people walking through the halls every 45 minutes.”  Lighten your “freshman backpack” by making several trips to your locker a day.

One of Niles North’s best attributes is diversity!  This school gives students the chance to join several different extracurricular activities such as: ethnic clubs, service clubs and projects, sports, and other miscellaneous clubs.  Anyone can make a proposal to create a new club to bring people together with same interests.

“This is the year to get involved to make new friends and create a fun and safe place with other students!  You can also experiment to find out what you like,” senior Vianey Toscano tells freshman, “Everyone should be in at least one sport or club, not only because it looks good on college apps, but it keeps you busy and connected with our school!”

If you still feel overwhelmed, don’t worry because eventually you will all dominate the halls of Niles North in the future!
