Candy store opening: Sweet and unique

Candy+store+opening%3A+Sweet+and+unique

Something sweet is coming to Skokie. This Sunday, June 1, is the grand opening of  Mini Man Monkey Brains, a candy store.  This candy store is like no other because it is a non-profit organization whose goal is to employ people on the autism spectrum.

Mini Man Monkey Brains is operated by Gloria Iverson, a Skokie resident. The idea of this unique candy store was prompted by Iverson’s son going to college. As her son, who falls on the autism spectrum, prepared for college, she realized that he and many of his friends would be seeking employment in the future. Unfortunately, only 33% of people with autism are able to find jobs, despite the fact that over two thirds would prefer active employment over government dependence.

In addition to the unique philosophy of this candy store, the name also has an unusual story behind it. “We have four sons. When they were little, they used to walk around saying strange things,” co-founder James Iverson said. “Mini Man Monkey Brains was one of those sayings. I think it was from an Indiana Jones movie or something.”

Because the couple lives in and loves Skokie, they decided it would be a nice location for their candy store. They also believe that Skokie is a place of appreciation for the handicapped. The store is located in downtown Skokie at 5047 Warren Street and will be opening this Sunday. Store hours will be every day except Saturday from 12:00- 5:00 p.m. The store features a wide variety of candy, cookies and even some toys.

Come out Sunday and show your support for Mini Man Monkey Brains and “eat candy, be happy”.
