Friday, November 14th marks the first Jazz concert of the year. It will be full of various groups and a wide range of songs. There will be performances by the three groups of Vocal Jazz, the Jazz band and Viking Strings. The concert starts at 7:30 pm in the auditorium.
Jazz music is a very different style of music compared to normal concert music that also comes with a smaller group of instrumentation.
In the Jazz Band, there are trumpets, a rhythm section, trombones, and saxophones (alto, baritone and tenor). It is directed by Michael Moehlmann. A big part of jazz band music is the opportunity for solos, most of which are improvised. For this concert, soloists include: Brad D’Costa, Daniel Sahyouni, Brian Cua, Geoffrey Schmelzer, Sam Borozin, Andrew Goldberg, Ross Schneider, Marvin Calma, and Troy D’Souza.
Vocal Jazz is broken up into three different groups: Sound Check, Harmonic Motion, and Take One. They perform mostly jazz and swing tunes, but also throw in some pop and a capella pieces.
Harmonic Motion is directed by Kathryn Lachey and will be performing three songs. Sound Check is directed by Logan Farris and they have four songs to perform. Lastly, Take One is directed by Daniel Gregerman. He and the group have prepared six songs.
Vocal Jazz rehearses late on Tuesday and Thursday nights, so they definitely form a connection together. Hannah Sahyouni of Take One commented on the bond with the other members, and her excitement for the concert.
“I love Vocal Jazz because it feels like my family. I have become so close with everyone in the group and I love that,” she said. “We’ve been working so hard to sound our best for the concert so I’m excited to let everyone hear our hard work pay off.”
Also featured in this concert are the Viking Strings! They are a new group that formed this year, directed by Jennifer Page. It features a variety of vocalists, string instruments and other instruments as well. They are an alternative music group that play more modern music.
Come out to see what will be an amazing performance that showcases an enormous amount of talented students, 7:30 in the auditorium!
