The recently announced 2011-2012 class of National Board Certified Teachers includes a total of five District 219 teachers. From Niles North, English teacher Daniel Horyn has completed the rigorous — some might say onerous– process.

“I found the National Board process to be one of the most empowering professional growth experiences of my career.  The experience taught me to critically consider the implications of the pedagogical choices I make and evaluate the instruction I deliver on a daily basis,” Horyn said.  “I would highly recommend this experience to any and all colleagues because I sincerely believe it has made me a better teacher.”

National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that pre-K to grade 12 teachers around the nation accomplish on a voluntary basis. The program’s purpose, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, is to shape “effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.”

The process for attaining the certification is demanding and daunting. It requires participants to complete a total of 10 assessments: four portfolio entries that highlight their teaching techniques and six response exercises that evaluate their content knowledge. These assignments are then submitted to a committee of trained teachers in their certificate areas for review.

The four other teachers who have acquired their National Board Certification this year are the following teachers from Niles West: Jayson Foster (Science), David Klingenberger (English), Andrew Roche (Math), and Anthony Serafini (Science). Currently, District 219 has a total of 26 National Board Certified Teachers, all from various subject areas.

At Niles North, the process for achieving National Board Certification is strongly supported by the administration network. Staff members including Scott Reed, Shoshana Goldman, John Kretsos and Christine Beeftink have mentored a number of teachers through the process and some have gone beyond, assisting teachers outside of the district as well. The district hopes that teachers continue to pursue this prestigious certification over the coming years.
