The power of the written word

The+power+of+the+written+word

Monday, March 3rd. Niles North’s annual Writer’s Week will kick off in the East Commons. The event will last all week, during all periods, for all types of writers looking to share their work.

During Writer’s Week, students, faculty, professionals, and alumni showcase their creativity through the written word, whether it be song lyrics, poetry, journalism or simple narratives. “Writing is a vehicle for lots of people, yet they use it in various ways” English teacher Jean Ordonez said.

You don’t have to be a writer to enjoy Writer’s Week. The event gives students the opportunity to listen, experience and be inspired by the work their peers perform, and hopes to spark an interest in writing as a way of expression.

“We do Writer’s Week because we know that not all learning is confined to the classroom. Sometimes the experiential learning is the best. Writing doesn’t always mean claim, evidence warrant.” Ordonez said.

Writing for the benefit of yourself rather than your GPA is a totally new concept for some students, but you would be surprised at just how rewarding it can be. There are so many different paths to take when it comes to writing in a creative way that suits you. It can bring you happiness, pride, and release feelings you never even realized you had. It’s about giving your mind the chance to breathe and let go of all the thoughts it traps inside on a daily basis. Let’s face it, as students, we owe it to ourselves to give our brains a break every once in a while.

For all you hidden writers out there who are

secretly debating signing up to share during Writer’s Week, don’t be afraid to take the leap. “”Opportunity knows how to find you, as long as you keep yourself open. Listen to your heart. Go with what feels good to you” Ordonez said.

If you’re interested in participating, contact Ms.Ordonez for more information.

Happy writing everyone!
