Radio rushes Christmas

Radio+rushes+Christmas

On Nov. 12, 2015, 93.9 MY FM started playing Christmas music.

Some people, such as myself, believe early November is too early to play Christmas music. There’s one month until Christmas, but still. If radio stations are going to play Christmas music, they should at least wait until after Thanksgiving.

“I think it’s too early to be playing Christmas music,” Omar Farooqi, senior, said. “I don’t really feel in the Christmas spirit until December.”

Christmas music should start being played after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a big holiday in the United States, but due to the early Christmas hype, Thanksgiving’s importance has decreased increasingly.

Thanksgiving is underappreciated in commercial media compared to Christmas. The purpose behind Thanksgiving is to spend quality time with your family and be thankful for what you have. However, Christmas music interrupts this idea by jumping out at you with commercialism. Don’t zoom past Thanksgiving straight into black Friday and Christmas. Stop and be thankful for what you have.

Thanksgiving gets people excited for Black Friday, which gets people excited for Christmas.
Black Friday is the kickoff day for Christmas shopping, so it would make more sense to start the Christmas music marathon on that day. Also, that would increase the excitement of the upcoming holiday even more. It’s okay to get people into the holiday spirit early, but not so early that it degrades the importance of another holiday.

Others believe it’s okay to listen to Christmas music early.

“I feel like it’s okay to listen to Christmas music,” Niles West junior Samantha Ratajczyk said. “But don’t forget about Thanksgiving. It’s just as important.”

For those of you who still want to listen to Christmas music, 93.9 MY FM is playing Christmas music 24 hours a day, seven days a week until 11:59 pm on December 25. You can listen on the radio, iHeart Radio, and MY FM’s website at http://www.939myfm.com.
