Bass fishing nabs the big one

Bass+fishing+nabs+the+big+one

Bass fishing, a relatively new sport at Niles North, and in the IHSA. is entering its next season coming up this spring. As a new sport many are still unaware of how a fishing competition works. According to head coach Patrick Steeno, “usually have two fisher persons in boats. There is a certain amount of time competition lasts, usually six to eight hours of two consecutive days.”

Bass fishing is scored by weight as Steeno explains. “Each boat is allowed to carry up to five fish which have to be alive at the end of the days fishing.”

Believe it or not, there is more to fishing than meets the eye. Fishers lift in the weight room to get ready for competition and practice crucial skills such as knot tying and water awareness, which is the prime location to fish.

Practices have already started, but if you are interested in joining the team, contact Gym teachers and co-head coaches Carol Herlocker and Patrick Steeno.
