Girls cross country sprint to the end

The girls cross country team is wrapping up their season. They competed in their conference on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Niles West High School.

Senior captain Trinette Lopez paved the way with her time of 21:07 in the three mile race, and senior captain Grace Haggerty closely followed with her time of 21:44. Achieving this time was especially exciting for Haggerty, considering it beat her last best time from sophomore year.

For most of the girls on the team, the conference meet was their last for the season. Yet, it seems that many were still able to end the season on a high note.

“If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that at the last meet everyone participated in would have 14/17 [get personal records] …I would have been thrilled,” Coach Swedberg said.

With the bonus of having familiarity from running the course at the Pat Savage Invite, sophomore Jennifer Goodfriend felt pleased with her performance.

“I preformed my best today. I really shaved a lot of time off of my last personal record and I’m really happy with my results.” Goodfriend says.

The anticipated regionals competition was held at Niles West High School on Oct. 26.

The seven girls who competed included Lopez, Talia Nehaus, Brittany Abrams, Haggerty, Teresa Knudson, Amanda Ly, and Nalin Naranjo. The five alternates were Maddy Valente, Emma Eschker, Janelle Limson, Nicole Knudson, and Kelli Wong.

At Regionals, Haggerty achieved another personal record and, along with Lopez and Knudson, was able to qualify for Sectionals, which took place at Lake Park on Nov. 2. There at Sectionals, Lopez was able to end her last Cross Country season on an especially high note by getting a personal record of 20:36 for the three mile.

Congratulations to the Lady Vikings who made it to Sectionals and all the other cross country girls who were able to grow and improve together as a team.

Go Vikings!
