Girls tennis starts season on positive note

The Niles North Girls tennis team has started their season off with a winning streak of 2-1.

The Vikings dominated Regina Dominican high school 3-2 in their first home game. The winning streak continued against Northside College Prep high school, with a final score of 4-1. Unfortunately, though, they lost their home game against West 1-6.

“We are off to a really good season this year,” John Amaro, varsity head coach, said. “The girls are all hard workers, and they just want to get better. You can also feel that they are all here for their other teammates so I feel like this is going to be a really positive, fun season.”

The girls success is due to their year-round dedication from off-season workouts and their participation in summer camps.

Nearly half of the girls this year have played United States Tennis Association tournaments as well. “After playing USTA tournaments, I definitely feel more confident and ready to play matches this season,” senior captain Irene Cho said.

Freshmen Sabrina Palavra and Ysabel Gonzaga also made the varsity team. Palavra is currently playing first singles and Gonzaga is playing third doubles with senior Dana Maglaque.

“Our main goal this year, as always, is to play good tennis, have good sportsmanship, and to just have fun!” Senior Megan Whitehouse said. “As for my own personal goals, I would like to work on my speed and strength.”

The team’s main competition this year will come from their conference matches against Glenbrook North, Deerfield, and Highland Park. “For those schools, we are just going to try to win as many games and play our best. We won’t be so concerned about the other side’s jersey; we will just be concerned about what we can do to win,” Amaro said.

“We are very thankful for all of the coaches, Andrew Klamm, Sandra Wilson and Tim Naatz. We are also thankful for coach Costello’s support,” Amaro said.

Come and support your girls tennis at their next home game against Fenton on September 6, at the Niles North tennis courts.
