With sweat dripping down their faces, chests puffing, and feet thumping to the sound of distant cheers from the stands, the girls enter the Chuck Pos Stadium ready to face their opponents. The seniors donning the classy black and white shirts look to their junior competitors in bright purple as all friendships are put aside for the night. All focus is directed at the football that will cut the tension between the class of 2017 and 2018.

The annual Powderpuff football game is upon Niles North as excitement runs high. On Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., the senior and junior girls will go head to head in a high stakes football game to win the title for their class.

“The purpose of Powderpuff is to kick off homecoming week and to have some fun, competitive school spirit. The take away for the girls is not only to have fun, but it is a great way for team building for our upper classmen. It also gives our Varsity football players the chance to be in a coaching role and our girls the chance to step on the field,” Kara Graber, Powderpuff sponsor, said.

The determined seniors will take the field looking for redemption after their loss last year.

“The seniors are winning this year!” Richard Thielsen, coach, said. On the other hand, the motivated juniors will show off their skills to raise the class of 2018 reputation.

“It is important for the junior class of 2018 to win because our freshman year, the sophomores booed at us and we are here to show we won’t ‘go home’,” Diana Vancea, junior, said.

With emotions running high on both sides, the girls practice with a determination to learn the rules of the game and create a legacy for themselves.

“Going into the Powderpuff game, I’m excited, nervous, but I’m ready to dominate the field,” Samantha Oshana, senior, said.
