Holiday-inspired treats and gifts will be sold by various clubs outside the cafeteria on December 15th, this coming Monday during lunch periods and possibly after school.

So far the gifts and treats include: Tee-shirts, Evil Eye bracelets, buttons, raffles for Starbucks cards, movie tickets, and a piñata stuffed with candy, as well as lots of food from Blizzards to Hanukkah sweets.

The participating clubs to watch out for will be Hebrew Honors Society, French Club, Book Club, DECA, Green Squad, Fem Club, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Chinese Club, National Art Honor Society, North Suburban Fair Trade Network, Maya Works, The Green Thumbs, Hellenic Club, Anime Club, WHO Club, and Dance Marathon.

The proceeds from selling these treats and gifts will go several charities that have been individually chosen by the participating clubs. The funds this year will go to Hadassah, Sit Stay Read, Nature Conservancy, Expanding Lives, World Wild Life Fund, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Daniel M. Horyn Foundation, Amped for Education in Nicaragua, Dick Blick art supplies for schools in need, Tiny Hearts Foundation, and Epilepsy Foundation of Chicago.

Last year’s club of Students Together Opposing Prejudice (STOP) has a new club name that rings with positive language as they set off on a new beginning under the name Yes All People. Their new club name acts as a play off of Yes All Men or Yes All Women and through “understanding and peace,” they are dedicated to addressing the issues of all people regardless of race, gender, religion, walk of life, and whatever other distinguishing labels are used to separate people. As their first move to get the attention of the student body, Yes All People is bringing students from various clubs to sponsor the event Gifts that Give.

For many members of student clubs and organizations, Yes All People is providing a channel for them to address issues that they deeply care about by hosting Gifts that Give.

As junior Sharmain Siddiqui, a fem club member, said “Only about six percent of girls in Niger attend secondary school.”

Through the event Gifts that Give, fem club will be selling bracelets made by women from Nigeria and will be sending the proceeds to the charity Expanding Lives. For developing countries, Expanding Lives have found that investing in education for women is the most cost efficient means of enacting change in their home communities.

So whether you are looking for a bite to eat, a present for a friend, or an opportunity to give a little to a charity, come by and check out what Niles North clubs have to offer.
