Team Epilepsy hosts homeroom canning contest

Seniors Med Jimenez, Amanda Ly, and Kiana Lee partnered up with the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago and formed Team Epilepsy as part of their DECA project over the past two years, and one way they’re hoping to raise money is through this year’s homeroom canning contest.

At the beginning of January, each homeroom was given a donation jar. As an incentive for students to donate, Team Epilepsy is offering a pizza party to the homeroom that raises the most money.

“Epilepsy affects one in twenty six people. Due to this high rate, we feel the need to raise awareness and funds,” Jimenez said.

All money raised will be going towards Camp Blackhawk, a week-long retreat for kids and teens with epilepsy hosted by the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago. For one week, camp-goers get to come together and experience all the fun activities and friendships that come with going to camp, while leaving behind the challenges epilepsy can bring to their daily lives.

“Many people in our community are affected by epilepsy,” Jimenez said. “In fact, we have heard many stories already.”

When Team Epilepsy hosted the same contest last year, it was Swedberg’s homeroom that won. There’s only a few days left before the competition is over, so look for the jar in your homeroom and donate all the spare change you have!

“We know that every dollar we donate will have a big impact on the lives of those with epilepsy,” Jimenez said.
