Congratulations to Jinbin Cao, senior, for being awarded the Gates Millennium Scholarship this past week. Niles North is proud to announce that Cao was one of the 1,000 students who received this, considering there’s over 53,000 applicants annually.

“I have to say it is my greatest honor to be selected as a Gate Millenium Scholar in my life. I am super lucky. Of course, regardless of the incredible luck. I have to appreciate all the people who have helped me a lot during the application process. First, I want to apprecaite Nahiyan, who is a Gate scholar in last year from our school. Appreciate him to encourage and motivate me to apply this scholarship and tell me about his experience. Then I have to appreciate Mr Joshi and Mr Musled. Appreciate their cherish time to be my nominator and recommender. Last, I have to thank the most important person who help me with my application, Ms Hussain. Without her, I couldn’t have finished those insane 9 essays in the application. Thank her to give me inspirison and suggestion to me to finish the essay by the deadline. All in all, I have to share this honor to everyone who helped me before. This honor is not belong to myself, it’s belong to us! I appreciate it at all! And I will keep working hard to make everything worthy. Thank you,” Cao said.

Among 1,000 scholars, the program divides them into groups based off ethnicity: African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic Americans. People from each ethnic group are awarded scholarships particularly. The Gates Millennium Scholarships allows for any of the scholars to attend any U.S accredited college of choice, undergraduate and graduate, free of charge. To be considered to be one of the few selected applicants, the program considers needed finance, leadership, community service, and academic achievements. The program is funded by a 1.6 billion dollar grant thanks to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Congratulations to Cao, and remember to always believe in yourself. Best to try than not try at all. Apply for scholarships you could be chosen for. You can visit the College Resource Center for any help.
